Diversify...

Well I was being interviewed by the schools newspaper about the diversity.

This year was suppose to be the highest amount of miniorites in VT history also the most brightest with the highest SAT score woot woot! ( he said something like that). He had asked us

how did I feel about the diversity I said I dont mind it its alright... Be honest its a big change from where i grew up all my life the bronx is the hometown of many blacks, latinos, asians etc...
The High School alone was different... Everyday during my highschool years I had to go through air port scanning (it was un bearable to be in a rush to class) which was a hassle.
It was almost like the scene of the book "A hope in the unseen" by Ron Suskind except the security in our school was alot tighter we had cops, peace cops (no guns), and hall patrol. The more I talked about it the more i got depressed about the bronx. Also near by would be the occasional ~gangsters~ which was really bunch a kids who'd jus jump people because they came in large groups in the projects. This why i came here its soooo much different, I just wanted to get away i guess....
So the reporter asked me "do you think it was the diversity that caused the problem or you think it was just the people in general?"
He then brought up about "white flight" which is when in a large populated community once it reaches a certain percentage of minorities they bounce out.(leave)
I must admit this was a very good question, it sorta hurt in a way but not like Ima transfer.
I really dont know... Why is it in large minority populated areas is it so bad?
Is it really because of the people?
Many might argue its because of the ghettos but i really dont know.
next few days my sis called to check up on me and she told me how a bunch of kids ran in to a persons car and like spat at the driver
(on grandeconcourse)I was like WOOOW and what the eff?
He seemed nervous when he brought this up, on the account he was caucasian and i was latino (i guess he mustve felt he was being racist?)

I just dont get it, why is it like this?!
can it be the music?
and i want a Bodega in Burlington!

One of the reasons that I think living in a community that is mainly minorities is different and/or more crime ridden at times, is because we still live in a prejudice country. The people being discriminated against usually is minorities. Typically when one person discriminates against another person the person being discriminated against will feel separated from certain groups in society. In turn causing a cycle of separation forming new prejudices that is lessening but still very present in the modern society.

So are you saying you're from the bronx or the reporter was? haha well im from brooklyn, so i kind of understand where you're coming from. my high school was pretty safe and we had random searches but we did not have metal detectors (there were rumors that this year the board of ed was going to enforce them but i haven't been home yet to know).. but i was still ready for a change in environment. This environment is a huge change, to someone coming from New York City there is not really any diversity at all here. To me, Burlington looks like a cute little safe town. I think it is bad in large minority areas not because of the people but because of the reputation.. it is hard to get rid of a reputation that was built up for years.. people are still prejudice, and in the "ghetto" they clump everyone together as the same and don't really give them a chance to amount to something that they deserve.
